MANAGING YOURSELF:
OFFICE MANAGEMENT AND OPERATION MANAGEMENT

An energizing module on this week was Operation Management and Office Management which took place from 18th May – 21st May 2009. Each module was conducted in two days period.

In Operation Management, we had been taught on effectiveness and efficiency in Operation Management. The module had stressed more on safety, health and environment quality. Philosophy of 5S which is the standard ethic in corporate companies also had been focused on. In Operation Management, we also learn about I.S.O (International Organization for Standardization), which is the measurement standard for an effective and efficient company. The requirement for I.S.O 9001:2008 was Q.M.S (Quality Management System), Management Responsibility, Resource Management, Product Realization and also M.A.I (Measurement, Analysis & Improvement).

For Office Management, the objective is to understand the importance and to identify the key elements of Office Management. The module also describes the efficient working and the acceptable behavior of an office worker. As one of the activity, we need to interview every department in the hotel to get the information about the hierarchy, job description and also the job flow that they need to go through in their work routine. This activity had expose the participants to know and to understand how a process happened, number of people involve and also the time duration that they need to go through.

As a conclusion, Office Management and Operation Management are the important aspect in leading one company to become more effective and efficient.

ACHIEVING EXCELLENCE PERFORMANCE AT WORK

Friday, 22nd May 2009, General Manager of Honda Sdn Bhd, Mr Azhar Bin Ab Wahab delivered his talk entitled ‘Achieving Excellence Performance at Work: Secret of Success’ which was organized by Valkyrie Sdn Bhd. The speaker emphasizes on how to work effectively, factors affecting performance at workplace and the secret of operational excellence.
Mr Azhar also shared about his knowledge and exciting experiences working at Proton and Honda. He also explained about the criteria to become a successful executive. According to Mr Azhar, to become a successful executive we must know how to improve the work process and not only seeking the result. He also added that an executives need to be creative in making decisions.
Furthermore, Mr Azhar also explained about different types of organizations, how to make a good resume and also tips to attend interview. The talk stopped at 10.30 am for tea break and continued again at 11.00 for the second part of the talk. After taking a few questions, Mr Azhar ended his talk at 12.15 pm and concluded that the main reason humans were created is to be a ‘khalifa’ on earth and send the message of Allah S.W.T.


WHAT WOULD YOU DO AFTER THIS:
I WISH I KNOW

On 21st May 2009, a Yassin and an Islamic Talk at surau for GEMS participants was organized by Marche Management Company. The speech was given by Ustaz Shariful Anam Bin Hj Arshad with the title of “I Wish I know”.

The talk tells us about the important to say ‘Alhamdulillah’in our daily life when doing any task. ’Alhamdulillah’ which means praise to Allah, Lord of universe. Suppose it has to be practice by all muslims in daily life. Besides that, as a muslim we should practice to recite ‘doa’ when doing any daily task. For example, we recite ‘doa’ before eat and going out from toilet.

Ustaz Shariful also said that some of Muslim people who are always depends their life based on luck. This is what happening in our muslim society, this where the purpose of ‘doa’ take place instead of depend life based on luck only. There are a lots of ‘doa’ that can be practice into our daily life. ’Doa’ that easily be granted by Allah when a person or group of people in ‘musafir’, ’doa’ by our mother and also ‘doa’ by our own.

On top of that, Ustaz Shariful also said as Muslim we should always recite ‘Selawat’ for our Prophet Muhammad S.A.W. The purpose of ‘Selawat’ are to praise our Prophet Muhammad S.A.W. and gained bless from Allah S.W.T. In the mean time, he also told us the story of Prophet Yunus when he had been thrown out from a ship because his name has been voted 3 times among the other members in the ship. He has been eaten by a big fish called ‘Nun’. As Allah S.W.T bless, Prophet Yunus still alive inside the fish. During Prophet Yunus inside the fish, he recites a ‘doa’ to ask from Allah S.W.T to let him out from the fish. Allah S.W.T granted his ‘doa’ and he has been vomited out by the fish at seashore.

Finally, Ustaz Shariful said that there are 6666 sentences inside Al-Quran. By right some of Muslim are forgetting about it or in other words didn’t know about it. Muslim people that practice recite Al-Quran in their daily life will be avert from doing a sins. Besides that when recite Al-Quran, it will given a peaceful of mind and soul. As a Muslim we need to practice to read and recite Al-Quran in our daily life.

On 23rd May 2009, Daun Lebar Corporation has organized Sport Closing Ceremony at the main field,Desaru Golden Beach Hotel. The program started at 7.30 a.m. with j-robic exercise to raise the spirit of the participants. In this event, the organizer has prepared several games for telematch. Among the games were transformer foot, dragonball war, chicken run, amazing race and tug of war. These games bring a lot of excitement and all companies have showed their enthusiasm as well as team spirit in competing one another.

On that day, the closing ceremony were attended by Mr. Hairuddin, academician from Bandar Penawar Sport School, Mr. Azahari B. Ahmad, Site Manager DGB01 and Colonel Jamal as the guest of honour. As a reward, the winners were given a hamper and trophy for their effort to win these games. At the end, the objectives of this program has achieved as it able to strengthen the relationship among participants. At 12.30 p.m., the ceremony was ended successfully.

WHO'S THE LEADER:
LEADERSHIP AND TEAMBUILDING


An invigorating week of Leadership and Teambuilding module took place from 11th May – 14th may 2009. The programme was categorized into 2 parts which were indoor activities and outdoor activities. The indoor activities were handled efficiently by Dr. Ismail Aby Jamal, whereas Mr. Haffis took care of our outdoor activities.

Participants were divided into 15 groups, whereby all the leaders (CEO’s) were gathered into one group. The purpose was to bring out the leadership skill in every participants. Indoor session was conducted to show how synergistic result can be gained through various activities such as jet-fighter making and desert survival module.

The outdoor activity was held on third day of the module at Desaru’s Eco Park. There were several fun yet mind-provoking activities such as rafting, mind-boggling quizzes, obstacle course, water confidence and egg race. These activities tested on our physical fitness, teamwork and personal attribute. This programme definitely enhanced the bond among the participants. Apart from that, post mortem on this module was held after the programme lessons learnt throughout the whole week were discussed. Team Victory won first place. Tarzan and Phoenix grabbed the first and 2nd runner up respectively.

Another activity conducted was a short film competition as well as patriotic song performed by each group. This competition named as Oscar Night and it was held on 14th May 2009. There are 7 nominies of short film and 7 nominies of patriotic choir group. The winning criteria depends on the creativity of each group to impress the judges. The Victory team was the winner on that night followed by Tarzan team and Untouchable team.


CORPORATE CULTURE AND VALUES IN MALAYSIAN GLC : VALUE TALK

Friday, 15th May 2009, the CEO of Irshad HR Consulting Sdn. Bhd., Tn. Haji Ahmad Raji Yaakob delivered his speech titled The Personal Qualities of the First Class Executive during value talk organized by Valkyrie Sdn.Bhd.
Each participants were given a handout of a case study. The case study is about Micheal Stolaczyk, who is Managing Director of Maersk Sealand in Prague, where he managed to double his company’s profit using a philosophy of Management and Leadership of “STAR” concept.

The speaker also emphasize on how to become a successful executive. What we need to equip ourselves with plus the direction in order to achieve the goal as a professional executive.

In general, the level of executive are separated into three categories which are top class, second class and third class executive. In preparing to be a first class executive, we need to expose ourselves internationally in conjuction with first class mentality, experiences, knowledge and ready to relocate anywhere.

In a nutshell, Tn.Haji Ahmad Raji conclude that the success of the company depends on its employee and there is no bad organization but there is always bad organizer.


JUST FOR REMEMBERANCE:
WORLD IN BARZAKH

On 14th May 2009, a Yassin and an Islamic Talk at surau for GEMS participants was organized by Daun Lebar Company. The speech was given by Ustaz Hazrin Hakim B Sulong with title “World in Barzakh”.

The talk tells us about the condition inside the grave after we died. What the punishment we get inside our grave are depends on our deed in life. Allah commandment “They will be drowned (with the flood and hurricane), then (at hereafter), they will go down to the hell” (Surah Nuh: 25). This piece of words from Al-Quran is evidence that the punishment inside the grave are exist.
Ustaz Hazrin also reminds us that for those Muslim who’s always leave their five times prayer, their name will be written at the door’s hell. Those names will not be erase until they complete their prayer that been abandoned. There are several causes that result to punishment such as neglect prayer, read the Quran but never practice it, not paying zakat, always practice riba’, slander between Muslim, drink alcohol, adultery and killing people.

Beside, he also gives us the meaning of death and Barzakh. In his explanation, death means separation of soul and body. In other hand, its means separation from life to Barzakh. Meanwhile, meaning of barzakh is world separation. Within life after death before life in the hereafter as a temporary stay. Ustaz emphasize about several worlds that we will go through in life such as world in soul, world inside the womb, world in life, world during facing death and world in Barzakh as well.
Abu-Laits said, for those who want to save from the grave punishment, we need to practice four things and leave four things. The four things that we need to do are watch our prayer, do a lot of charity, read holy Al-Quran and also always hymn to Allah (prayer of rememberance). Meanwhile, we need to leave four things such as talk a lie, traitorous, always talk a nonsense story and also excrement.

As conclusion, according to Arabic proverbs ‘Knowledge without practice is like tree without fruits’.

SPORT EVENT:
TIME FOR FRIENDLY

On 16th May 2009, there’s a friendly match between Iskandar Malaysia and GEMS participant for Beach Soccer and Ping Pong. The Beach Soccer match was held at Desaru beach while the Ping Pong match was at the Dining Hall. This friendly was organized by Daun Lebar Corp and the GEMS participant was represented by the top team of the previous matches.

The first Beach Soccer match was started by match between Iskandar Malaysia and GEM at 4.30PM and finish by match between Desire and GEM. The friendly was won by Iskandar Malaysia with two wins and one draw. All teams have given their full commitment and cooperation to make sure the match went well.

The Ping Pong match was started at 8.30PM where all five matches were won by the GEMS representative.Congratulation for the victory.
On the 17th May 2009, the friendly match was between GEMS United and Desaru Boyz also involving Beach Soccer and Ping Pong. The Beach Soccer match started at 5.38PM. The result of the friendly was a draw after both team won one of the game while the first match was draw.

For the Ping Pong, the match started at 9.00PM and won by Desaru Boyz with 3 games over 2. Congratulation to Desaru Boyz for their victory. Thank you for the full cooperation of both teams during the match.

HELP THE COMMUNITY:
COMMUNITY SERVICE

Saturday, 9th May 2009, community service program themed “We Care, We Share” was held at Felda Adela, Pengerang, Kota Tinggi organized by Marche Management Group. The objective of this program is to increase knowledge in healthy lifestyle among the community. This program allows sharing of experiences among different age of groups which include GEMS participants, school children and senior citizens in achieving excellence in life and managing a project. The program was launched by Mr. Hasree Mohd who is the representative from Khazanah Nasional Berhad at 8.30 a.m. after J-robic exercise.

The program was conducted simultaneously in two places. Career profiling was held at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Adela for PMR, SPM and STPM students. About 280 students participated in the profiling session which were guided by GEMS facilitators and led by Dr. Ismail Aby Jamal as the moderator. The students obtained a lot of benefit from this program because they got to know their characters as well as suitable working field.

While at Wisma Adela, a lot of exciting activities was organized such as J-robic, futsal, volleyball, telematch competition and ‘rewang’. The villagers gave a warm welcome and also full commitment to GEMS participants to show their support in ensuring the program run successfully. The program was ended with a prize giving ceremony by representative from Khazanah Nasional Berhad.

In a nutshell, this program was really impressive plus encouraging as it changed mind setting of young generation towards senior citizens. Hopefully, this kind of program will continously be organized in making a valuable relationship between different generations.

PROJECT PLANNING AND COORDINATION


On 4th – 7th May 2009, all GEMS participants had gone through two modules which is ‘Time Management’ and ‘Project Planning & Coordination’. The first four groups initiated the week with the module on Project Planning & Coordination, whereby the remaining four groups with Time Management module.

In Project Planning & Coordination module, participants were introduced with the overview and application of project management. The main ideas of project planning were based on initiation, planning, execution, control and closing. This module had given huge benefits to all participants as they can apply the basic of project management technique in their future.



MANAGING YOUR TIME:
TIME MANAGEMENT


For Time Management session, participants were exposed to the concept of managing time efficiently and effectively. This session is actually based on self management. Therefore, positive attitude, strong will-power and optimistic mindset are needed to be an efficient time manager. Participants also obtained knowledge as well as tips and techniques of time management.


Both modules were beneficial to all participants since it will help them to improve themselves in order to be an efficient, effective as well as competitive individual when entering the job market.


CORPORATE CULTURE AND VALUES IN MALAYSIAN GLC : VALUE TALK

On Friday 8th May 2009 at 9.00 a.m., Value Talk was held at Bistari Hall, Desaru Golden Beach Hotel organized by Valkyrie Sdn Bhd. The program which was compulsory to all GEMS participants was delivered by Dr. Ismail Aby Jamal, Senior Consultant from Irshad HR Consulting Sdn Bhd.
The topic discussed was “Understanding the Work Culture of the Corporate Sector”. It was focusing on the corporate cultures and values in Malaysian GLCs. The talk took about two hours which explained about the GLCs’ ethical standard pattern and how to adapt with new working cultures.
The speaker also emphasized on the core values and principles of executive levels either in the government or GLC sectors. The talk ended with Dr. Ismail answering a few questions from the participants to conclude the session. The program was useful to equip the participants with an early preparation before entering on job training.


ISLAMIC TALK
‘MIN AINA ILA AINA’


On 7th May 2009, a Yassin and an Islamic Talk at surau for all GEMS participant was organized by Desire Event Management Company. The speech was given by Ustaz Sharudin B Abd Mubin with title “Min Aina Ila Aina” means “From Where To Where”.

This Islamic Talk has four main objectives; which are “Who We Are”, “Today Muslim’s Challenge”, “Start Changes, A New You Will Born”, and “Success in Life and HereAfter”.
The first objective talk about our origin and the speaker reminds us that everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. So, we should use it at our best effort.

The second explained about the problem that muslim teenagers nowadays facing in their daily life. He also told that the day will come when Allah shows us sign to makes us aware of His Greatness.

The third one talk about the solution of those problem faced by muslim nowadays. It all comes back to our religious spirit. How we perform our prayers and where we go when we have problems reflect our spirit.

He also told the audience about the solution. First, maintain our prayers. Then, always refer to Al-Quran and Hadith when facing problem. Always remember our prophet and pray for him. Finally, remember that Heaven and Hell are real and the punishment is also real.

Finally, for the last objective, the speaker told about four types of person; fail in life and hereafter, success in life but fail in hereafter, fail in life but success in hereafter, and success in life and hereafter. InsyaAllah life will be easy if we manage to achieve the last type of person.



SPORT EVENT:
BATTLE TO THE END

On 6 May 2009, a volleyball competition for semi final was held at DGB Hotel. The competition started at 5.30pm. Every team gave full commitment although there were some technical problem at the beginning. The team was struggling in beating E-First female team before going to final. They were also competing with Daun Lebar female team in final match.

The GGS female team became the winner after beating Daun Lebar female team with straight goal. They were also facing hard competition at the second set during the final match. On the other hand, for the volleyball competition for male, every team were competing each other with a full of spirit to win the competition eventhough their competition was been postponed from 7 May to 9 May 2009. The MMG male team become the winner after beating GEM male team. Furthermore, the final match for beach soccer was held on the same week with volleyball competition, 8 May 2009 and the winner goes to Daun Lebar male team after beating Desire male team.

On the next day, 9 May 2009, the netball competition was held at 5.30pm. The first game started with GGS female team versus E-First female team. Although the participants had lost their energy because of community service activities in the morning at Felda Adela, all the player still can play well and with a full of spirit to win the competition.

At the end of the week for sport event which was held on 10 May 2009, the ping pong match and the chess competition started at 9.30 a.m. The ping pong match was held at Sunrise Cafe DGB, while the chess competition was held at Marche Management Group (MMG) office. All the ping pong player were very focus and giving full commitment to win this competition. The winner for the chess competition was Desire team followed by GGS team. During the competition, all the supporter were giving a full of commitment to support their team members. The last match was finished at 6.30pm.

Congratulation to all participant and organizer for giving full of cooperation to make sure this event become success.

MODULES

After two weeks of English language module, the GEMS program continued with the second part of its in-house training. This time the module involved a lot of soft skills that were essential to GEMS participants to improve their competency.

There were two modules conducted last week. Each group will learn a module for two days. The modules were ‘Professional Grooming’ and ‘Problem Solving.’

The module of ‘Professional Grooming’ involved an intensive learning about personal makeover, professional style, social etiquette and communication. While ‘Problem Solving’ teaches participants on how to identify causes of problem and how to deal with it.

If the English classes were arranged according to English language proficiency, this time the arrangement of the class was back into the previous company group

GEMS TALENT DAY

On Saturday 25th of April 2009, E-First Group organized the GEMS Talent Day, one of the GEMS main projects

The main objective of the project is to encourage participation in creative arts. It also aims to equip participants with interpersonal skills and familiarize participants in using English in front of people with the inclusion of public speaking category in the talent day slot.

All groups sent their participants for the event. With the theme “Shining Star”, the program was colored with dramas, choir, chorus speaking and dikir barat at the creativity of each group.

The event was also being watched by the guests of honor, Mr. Amizi Busri, representative from Khazanah Nasional Berhad; Dr. Ismail Aby Jamal, Senior Consultant of Irshad HR Consulting Sdn Bhd; and Mr. Azahari Ahmad, Site Manager of GEMS program. English trainers, Mr Mark Suresh and Ms Yogi were also invited as judges for the talent competition.

ENGLISH TRAINERS DINNER

On Friday, 24 April 2009, a farewell dinner was held for the English trainers. It was organized by Team 7, E-First Consultation to give appreciation to the trainers who teach the participants for the last two weeks.

The dinner was themed “Malaysian Night” with the guests wearing Malaysian traditional attire as well as formal attire. It was officiated by Mr. Azahari Ahmad, Site Manager of Desaru GEMS program. Also invited that night were Mr. Shamsudin, Assistant Manager of Desaru Golden Beach Hotel and Mr. Ellilen Chandran from Al-Ikhlas Cambridge Sdn. Bhd.

Guests were served with barbequed fares and cold dessert. While having the dinner, guests were entertained with various performances by GEMS participants. The atmosphere that night was beyond expectation with guests gives their whole enthusiasm to make the dinner being remembered for a long time.
The performances that night were dedication for the trainers. Each of the group was eager to show their appreciation for their trainers. As a result, the show went very well. Lucky draw was also added to the slot to spice up the night.

As a finale, each English trainer was invited to the stage to have karaoke with the participants. Participants also take the chance that night to give presents for their trainers. Everyone was satisfied with the flow of the event and hope that similar occasion can be organized again for the next time.

ENGLISH CLASS:
FUN AND INTRACTIVE LEARNING

The English module classes reach its finale last week. Several activities conducted to fill in the last part of the learning modules.

For most of the classes, the activities were conducted internally. Class 7 and 8 spent the time with class games and quizzes; charades, pictionary and hangman. The games were conducted not only just for fun but also for the purpose of learning by general knowledge and English vocabulary and idioms.
To test the participants’ improvement in English, a post-test was conducted in every English class. The overall result shows that the participants were improved a lot in English during the past two weeks of English learning.
On Friday before the end of the English class, report cards were produced and given to the participants. Trainers also gave their comment and advice to improve the participants in English language. Most of the trainers were happy with the participants’ performance for the past two weeks. The only things that they concern are the vocabulary and grammatical error which had to be sharpening from time to time.
Participants were satisfied with the English module. They found that the module is very important for them in order to gain competency in job market.

SPORT EVENT:
FROM PITCH TO CAROM TABLE


On 20th April, beach soccer and netball matches continue its action. There were four matches held in each game which were the last matches in the qualification round. From 8 teams competed, only 4 teams were qualified to go for the semi-final round of each game.

For some of the teams, the last match was very important to determine if they will qualify for the next round. For others, it is just a matter of completing the match schedule. But still, their game spirit was still high although they were already not qualified to go to semi-final.

In beach soccer, 4 matches were held between GGS vs MMG, Daun Lebar vs Desire, Valkeyrie vs Agrogreen, and GEM vs E-First. Most of the team had a chance to qualified hence every team put all their effort to catch the critical points. In the end, only Daun Lebar, Desire, GEM and Valkeyrie qualified for the next stage.

The netball matches were also started simultaneously with beach soccer. The match arrangement was the same as the beach soccer. As expected, GGS, which already qualified to the semi final, win the last match without missing any point. Other teams that follow GGS to the next round are E-First, Daun Lebar and GEM.

Meanwhile, carom also took place last week. And it became the first game that wrap up its result and had its winner. There were so many fans came to see this game although the game took place in a small space under the recreational gazebo.

As usual, supporter from each teams showed their full commitment by cheering, clapping and give morale support. Even though their teams were not qualified, they still showed their fair play and sportsmanship. This is what we should proud of them.

All the matches were held successfully. Even though, there was some injury and arguments between players, it was just a temporary.

For the teams that qualified to semi final, congratulation and good luck. To supporters, don’t forget to cheer your team next week.

LETS LEARN ENGLISH!

The English class began on Monday, 13 April 2009. The classes will be conducted for 2 weeks as part of the GEMS module. The objective of the class is to enhance the proficiency and the usage of English among the participants which will be an added value when entering working field.

There were eight instructors teaching every class. Participants were divided into 8 classes based on their proficiency in English. Their proficiency was tested during the English Placement Test which was conducted in the previous week.

Before the class began, all participants were provided with module books which were given during the briefing session held on Sunday night, 12 April 2009.
As each class had different proficiency, each of them had different methods of learning and activities. It was based on the creativity of their respective instructor and how the participants interact with the lesson.

The class activities included role play, speaker’s corner and class lesson and exercises.

There were also inter-class activities conducted during the first week of English class that include English debate, singing competition, poetry reading and public speaking. Interestingly, the singing competition was not judges by the vocal instead the pronunciation plays the important criteria.

Participants enjoyed the module very much. They also realized the important of English and agreed that English module should continue as part of the module of GEMS program in the future.


YASSIN, HAJAT PRAYER AND ISLAMIC TALK

On the 16th of April, Global Green Solution (Group 1) organized a Yassin recitation and Islamic talk for GEMS participants. The program was held to expose everyone to Islamic values and also enhanced their knowledge and raise awareness about it.
The programmed started at 7.00pm with the arrival of all participants at Bistari Hall and Maghrib prayer at 7.20pm.Also attended the program was GEMS site manager Mr. Azahari and Mr Hairani.

After the Yassin recitation, Isyak and Hajat prayer, Ustaz Muliade Bin Umat, the invited speaker, gave a talk about ‘The Importance at Congregational Prayer in the Building of Ummah’ at

9.00pm.It was good sight to see when all the participants enjoyed themselves during the whole talk. The programme ended at 10.15pm. The speaker were then invited for some refreshment.

For certain, this program can give a lot of benefit to everyone especially in willing and strengthening good relationship among Muslims. Hopefully, this program will continue for the benefit of Ummah

English talent day

On Saturday, 18 April 2009, with the initiatives of GEMS secretariat and English class instructor, a talent day was organized.

The program was organized
as part of the English learning activities and to instill creativity among participants. This can be observed when every group perform a different kind of performances.
There were poetry reading, choral speaking and some short play included with the creativity by the participants.

The finale was done by Class 8 in which they read poems describing the character of every English instructors. Then followed by a song, ’Stand By Me’ where during the song, all instructors were invited to the stage to receive standing ovation by participants.

Although there was no winner for the performance, everyone satisfied as they had give all of their commitment in the performance to ensure the program is a succeed.

After the program ended, all groups took chance taking pictures with their instructors.


SPORT EVENT

Sports event was commenced last week. It was organized by Daun Lebar Sdn Bhd. Many sports activities were organized, such as beach volleyball, beach soccer, table tennis, netball, chess and carom.

An opening ceremony was held on Wednesday, 15 April 2009 at 5.00pm right before the action begins. It was launched by En Azahari, the GEMS site manager.

All participants had given their full commitment by involving in the tournament. Each company sent their representatives for each game and showed their team spirit which can be seen by their team banner. Some companies also have their own cheerleader.

Games that began their action were beach soccer, netball and carom. Except carom, all games were conducted in league format; therefore all companies still have a chance to win.

A NEW BEGINNING:
GEMS REGISTRATION DAY







Khazanah Nasional Berhad together with Career Excell and Irshad HR Consultant conducted the Graduation Employability Management Scheme (GEMS) program which began in several places. In the southern region the GEMS was held at Desaru Golden Beach Hotel.

The program which will be conducted for two and a half month received a very good response from graduates. About 217 participants registered on that day started from 2.30 until 5.30pm at the hotel lobby.


During the registration, participants were given a program kit containing the schedule for the whole program.

The overall registration process was smooth. To all participants, we welcome you to this program and we hope that you will be succeed throughout this program.

GET TO KNOW:
WHO'S WHO AT DESARU


A brief introduction about the GEMS program was held at 8.30 pm in Bestari Hall involving all the GEMS participants as well as the GEMS and Desaru Golden Beach Hotel (DGBH) staff.

Mr. Azahari Ahmad, the site’s program manager was the speaker on that night. He gave some ideas of what GEMS is and the people behind it. Col. Mohd Jamal Salleh, the General Manager of DGBH. He introduced his staff to the participants including Mr Abdul Hamid, the security officer who then gave a talk about the security measures at the hotel.





Right after the briefing ended, the participants were divided into eight groups. Each group was given tasks to select the Board of Directors, to create the company’s vision, mission, logo and the motto.

The session gave a chance for the participants to get to know the people behind the program and also to know each other.




GEMS OPENING CEREMONY

The opening ceremony of GEMS program was held at Bestari Hall, Desaru Golden Beach Resort.

The ceremony began at 9.30a.m. Present at the ceremony was Pn. Fazlinda Kassim, the GEMS Project Manager of Khazanah Nasional; Tn. Hj Ahmad Raji Yaakub, CEO’s Irshad HR Consulting; En. Hasnee Mohammed, Vice president of Strategic Human Capital Management of Khazanah Nasional and En. Mohd Razali Abdul Rashid, Project Manager of GEMS DGB01.

The program was officially launched by Pn. Fazlinda in a simple yet memorable ceremony. In her speech she thanks to all participants who came from near and far to gain knowledge from the program. She also hoped that at the end of the eight and a half month in-house training and attachment program, all participants will acquire all the necessary skills to compete in the job market.

After the official launch, all participants, led by Mohd Helmi, wholeheartedly declared their oath to participate in all of the programme’s activities and promise to abide with all the rules and regulations as stipulated. The ceremony ended with all participants singing the GEMS song. The singing was so energetic that even Tn. Hj. Ahmad Raji gave his thumbs up.

Before the guests of honour left the venue, they were invited to have a photography session with all GEMS participants. Although the outside weather was hot, the participants gave their cooperation and were excited to have their picture taken.












MANUAL BRIEFING





Participants were then invited to attend the manual briefing session. At the session, Tn. Hj. Ahmad Raji gave the briefing and explained about the manual which was given to participants. There was also a question and answer session where participants were given a chance to ask anything that they did not understand.

At the end of the session, all participants were satisfied with the explanation.













LET’S AEROBIC






On Thursday, 9th April, in aerobic exercise was held on the evening. It was conducted by two representatives from Sekolah Sukan Bandar Penawar. The representatives, who were former national netball players, shared their expertise with all GEMS participants. They showed the right way to workout without injury. All GEMS participants had given their full commitment and cooperation.

There were three exercise sessions conducted during the aerobic session. The session began with some warming up. After that, the participants followed the instructors for some aerobic movement. They were also taught some ‘tai-chi’ movement to control the breathing.

Finally, a cooling down session which involved body stretching was conducted.

The aerobic exercise is good as it improves agility, flexibility as well as body stamina. It will lead to a healthy lifestyle among participants. To the GEMS participants, “Let’s aerobic and exercise every day. May healthy body and soul lead us to success!!”












ACHIEVING PERSONAL EXCELLENCE






Right after the holiday, the GEMS training sessions began with the first module of motivation seminar for three days from 9th to 11th of April 2009.

The module, ‘Achieving Personal Excellence’ was conducted at Bestari Hall, Desaru Golden Beach Resort. A prominent figure in motivation talk, Tn. Hj. Nicholas Sylvester @ Muhammad Abdullah (Mr. Nick) was invited to give his expertise in motivating the participants.

The purpose of the module was to motivate the participants while at the same time to change their mindset and attitude from being a passive to an active person. Everyone was eagerly participating in every activity conducted and stand up in front to share their ideas.

On the first day, the seminar began with the arrangement of groups. Participants were divided into 21 groups, each consisted of around ten to twelve members. Each group was then instructed to name their group according to alphabet given, selected the group leader, logo and motto for the group.

To make the seminar more interesting, every activities conducted were given points for the audience participation. The motive was to capture the audience participation in the activity and to make the seminar more interesting.

On the second day, the module was continued by Mr. Nick who explained about the ‘7 Steps Journey Towards Personal Excellent.’ Before he began, he informed the marks for each group to get the group’s motivation and excitement to earn points by participating in the activity. And it’s true. On the second day, more and more participation received from the audiences. Not only for getting more points but also the eagerness to participate.

On the third day, the module came to its final phase. Due to the time shortage, Mr. Nick had to take extra time to finish the module. Yet, no objection came from the participants.

The GEMS site manager, Encik Azahari Ahmad was also invited to share his life experience as a lesson for the audience. “Whatever the task provided, we need a very strong spirit to achieve what we want” said Mr. Azhari to the audience.

Before the end of the seminar, points for each group were accumulated and announced at the prize giving ceremony. The winner of the overall seminar module was group Majestic, followed by group Love, and the 2nd runner-up was group Dynamic.

The module was a resounding success. From the GEMS organizer, they hope that all the participants will alleviate their confidence level and ensuring that they will be ready to face life challenges especially in preparing themselves to enter the work field.













THE AMAZING EXPLORACE






One of the interesting items in the achieving personal excellent program was Explorace. The race began at 3.30pm after Friday prayers after being briefed by GEMS secretariat. The team was divided into 8 groups and after receiving the first clue, the groups started the race from Bistari Hall.

The race started with greatenthausiasm from each group but with respect to each other and maintaining safety all the time. The groups had to complete the task by answering questions given while at the same time exploring through Desaru Golden Beach Hotel.

One of the highlights of the race was at one of the check point where the GEMS site manager,Mr Azahari Ahmad become a goalkeeper while the participants had to shoot the ball pass him.

The race ended at 5pm and it received good comments from GEMS participants where it is teaches about teamwork, active thinking but most importantly to apply GEMS values in the activity.

The explore was closed with debriefing of the activity by motivator Hj Mohamad Abdullah and Mr Azahari in the evening. The participants were also asked to list all the lesson learned during the race and use it to improve themselves.
